At this time of the year, after Red Hook Crit in Milano, you find yourself settling in with the idea that the crit season in over. At the same time you wonder, why is Stefan Reimer from Team Fixedpott is still taking down mile after mile on his road bike if the season is over. Then you think: “Oh well, I guess Stefan just likes to ride his bike”. And you stop thinking about it. Until you read the Fixedpott posting in which they congratulate their 1.800th facebook fan (a Thai) and promise to bring him a t-shirt “”(…) if (he) (…) come(s) to Bangkok Criterium (…)”. And no later than seeing this posting on the official facebook page of the Bangkok Criterium you know for sure: Fixed Gear Crit season is by no means over for this year. At least not in Thailand. Or for Fixedpott.

And if you then get a message from the management board of Fixedpott (aka Paul) asking you, if it would be possible to borrow you GoPro for a few days, it is crystal clear: The Fixedpott guys are flying over to race a crit in Thailand. In Bangkok. That is un-fucking-fixedgear-believable. That is the moment where you get just a little bit jealous, because let’s face it: December in Germany is not the best month – weather-wise. The weather at that time of the year in Thailand is whole nother story – says weather.com.

Still, it is great to see how global the scene is getting and that it is possible for normal people to fly to Thailand for a race. Partly even with a little help from sponsors – although most of the cash still comes out of one’s own pocket. What seems okay to me, as it is only a hobby. And a hobby costs money. Otherwise it is called a job.

Anyway, let’s be curious what Fixedpott can pull off over there (=Asia, in contrast to “down there” = Africa, “up there” = everywhere colder than in Germany and “I come from a land down under” = Australia) and keep our fingers crossed for them. By the way, the course really looks pretty rad.

I just noticed that I become less jealous by the second. Because let’s be honest: December is pretty great here actually. Christmas markets, drunk women with flashing reindeer antlers on their heads, consumption terror all over the place, snow slush everywhere… damn, now I a really jealous.
